Jon: Alexa's My BFF, So I Wanted to Plan Her Engagement Party
Alexa has been my best friend for the last 10 years. That is about 120 months, a decade. It's literally longer than the careers of some famous pop stars. So of course there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to help plan Alexa's engagement party.
Even before she was actually engaged, I just assumed I would be involved with the planning. So when Cathy jumped in out of nowhere and said she was going to throw a party for Alexa and Danny, I was furious. Something I was planning to do all along was almost taken away from me in about three seconds.
Then when she asked me to "assist" with the party…that was just the icing on the fat-free cake: NO way. I will not be an assistant to my best friend's engagement party. I think Cathy saw the look on my face and realized my tone wasn't going to back down, so when she mentioned me becoming a co-chair I was like, OK, fine, that's cute.
But nothing comes that easy with Cathy.
When I was at her house for the initial planning, she had me writing notes. That's not something a co-chair does, so I obviously didn't feel like one. I felt like an intern at the Giove residence, and I just wasn't down with that. I know more about what Alexa likes and what she doesn't like; I was there for everything. I understand she and Cathy have a close bond, and I completely respect that, but there are some lines you don't cross.
When we started shopping together for the decorations, it dawned on me that Cathy and I have the same goal in mind for the same reason: our love for Alexa. When you have mutual love for someone, that is really the only thing you need to have in common to make something work. Our theme for the party turned out to be FABULOUS! We had waitresses in fairy wings, we had butterflies, we had glitter; it was basically Andy Warhol's engagement party to Alexa.
Alexa and Danny LOVED the party, and I was so happy they did. They deserved to have a great party, because they are such good people; together they are amazing and deserve nothing but the best. The most amazing and intense part of the night came when Alexa's brother Andy surprised us all, especially Alexa. I had NO idea he was going to be there, so that was a very special moment. I'm so happy I got to share that.
Cathy and I ended up working really well together, and now I can see why Alexa has so much love and respect for her. I don't know if we will plan a party together again anytime soon, but I can definitely see us getting dinner and drinks next weekend.
