Kimora's Top Denim Tips for Every Woman
There's a line in this episode about how I built my career on developing denim, and I truly meant that. I built a billion dollar business on the idea that denim should feel like each girl wearing it designed it for herself. It's important to find the right fit, shape and color to really bring out the beauty of every woman's form.
I personally have been wearing skinny jeans with neutral accessories lately. I like them to cut at the ankle and have a more tailored feel. The look can make you more versatile because they're appropriate for work or play—anything, really!
However, baggier jeans are making a comeback—most frequently belted and with a distressed feel—and wide leg jeans are also still in play. I think it's the retro element that keeps them relevant. They're classic when paired with a high heel and statement top.
Over the years, I've learned a thing or two about form and function where denim is concerned, so I've got some fabulous tips to help you find the perfect pair of jeans for you:
- A snug waistband is a must! You shouldn't be able to stick more than three fingers down the back of your jeans. Likewise, you should have to put forth a little bit of effort to get into them—they shouldn't slide on easily. Any looseness in your jeans should be earned from wear, not purchase.
- Here's a true fashionista tip: If you're wearing a bootcut or flared jean and you're having them hemmed, take the shoes (or a representative style) to the tailor with you. Cropped jeans need to be hemmed sometimes, too. Don't hesitate!
- Don't feel like you're being too "extra" by having your jeans altered. Tiny changes like little trims here and there make a big difference in the finished look, and it's not as expensive as you might think. However, do beware of tailors who will charge you more simply because you're a woman. Shop around!
