Empire Girls' Angie Martinez Talks Splurges and Sage Advice
Hot 97 radio star Angie Martinez is known as the Voice of New York, but her biggest fans just may be her friends Adrienne Bailon and Julissa Bermudez. Get to know more about this Empire Girl in our Q&A,and tune in to Style Sunday @ 9/8c to see her in action!
How would you describe your style philosophy?
When my look is effortless and classic with a little bit of edge, that's when I'm most comfortable.
What's your biggest fashion splurge ever?
The beginning of each season, I usually add a new bag to my collection. This summer I splurged on two: a Givenchy Nightingale handbag and the Céline Phantom Tote. But of course it's not a splurge if you really need it...at least that's what I keep telling myself!
Who are your favorite designers?
Rachel Roy, Stella McCartney and Helmut Lang are a few of my faves.
Is there a must-have accessory you always have on?
I don't necessarily have one thing, because my mood is constantly changing, but the only thing I rarely take off is my Cartier Love bracelet.
What is your daily beauty routine?
I am a big fan of Neutrogena's makeup remover wipes—the easiest way to get all the makeup off after a long day—and Sally Hershberger face cream. Those are two of my staple products.
Do you have a great beauty tip to share?
Drink lots of water and get plenty of rest! The rest part is always a challenge for me, but it's a work a progress.
How did you become friends with Adrienne?
I've known Adrienne since she was 14 (in 3LW), and we connected immediately. She was this little Puerto Rican girl from the Lower East Side who had an affinity toward me, which was endearing and in turn made me feel like I always had to look out for her. We've been very close ever since. I've met Julissa over the years in the business, and I've recently gotten to know her better through Adrienne.
Why do they call you the Oracle?
I'm not sure why they call me the Oracle... it's entirely too much pressure, but for some reason they feel every time I give them advice it pans out the way I suggested.
Where did your nickname the Voice of New York come from?
People would say that when they came back to New York from being away, it felt good to hear my voice. They knew they were home. So, guys at the station started calling me that, and it stuck.
What is your favorite and least favorite part of the job?
My favorite part has to be interviewing interesting people and having a hand breaking new music and artists. There really is no worst part; I love what I do and would be really hard pressed to find a reason to complain!
Who's been your favorite interview?
Jay-Z has always been one of my favorites. We've had so many amazing interviews over the years, but President Barack Obama referring to me as the Voice of New York was by far one of the coolest interview moments in my career.
Who is your biggest inspiration?
On the personal side, my mom. She's the best woman I know, and I continue to learn from her every day. On a business side, Oprah Winfrey...she's my Oracle.
