Tamera Talks Pitching New Image & Wine in the Big Apple
It was so much fun taping The Revolution with Tim Gunn I love doing talk shows because I love to talk! I love the energy of talk shows. Of course, I love Tim Gunn. I'm a huge fan of Project Runway. It was a treat to see him!
The main reason why I wanted to meet with fashion editors in New York is because first impressions and face-to-face meetings are very important. It's different for someone to hear about you over the Internet or hear about you through your past shows than to see a person in their current state. It was nerve-racking because they do judge you. You have to accept that and just go with the flow.
Essence magazine wanted me to differentiate myself from my sister, sort of how Solange and Beyoncé have different images. What happens is that the public tends to compare celebrities who are also sisters, unfortunately. If I drastically change my look, I'm able to do that. However, I believe that I'm already different and I was honing in on my new image. I want my look to coincide with who I am as a person. I don't want to change my look to become someone who I'm not just to be seen as "different."
I see myself as sophisticated, but also sleek and chic. The only way I can describe it is like this: Jennifer Lawrence's style is very chic and sophisticated, but she has a youthful hipness. Kate Middleton, on the other hand, is sophisticated and very conservative. I'm trying to move from the Kate Middleton look to Jennifer Lawrence look.
Overall, I believe that pitching myself to the fashion editors went really great. I ended up getting a write-up in Essence and Glamour magazine. I got an interview with Self.com. All of the hard work really did pay off.
The meeting with the wine distributor was also nerve-racking, at first, because I kept trying to focus on the right things. Once I connected with the distributor and was just honest and relaxed, that's when things started going great. He actually loved the wine. He called my father-in-law and wanted to get more information on it.
I definitely know that moms can party. With me, it wasn't so much that I thought Tia couldn't party now that she's a mom; it was just the visual. It's like, Oh my God! This is a mom! What I visualized was the Cree-mom Tia doing the things she used to do. But I now understand that you evolve as a mom, and you can still have fun—and Tia did.
