Michelle Obama's Influence on 2013 Fashion
The First Lady's distinct and colorful sense of style has altered the course of fashion at large. Here's how.
Does this sketch look familiar? The dress's sleeveless style, below-the-ankles length, bold print and flared silhouette have "FLOTUS" all over it. Yet this garment that has not yet seen the light of day. It's a sketch for a look in the Fall 2013 fashion show by Tracy Reese, to take place Feb Febriary 10 in New York.
It's not the dress you have seen before, but the overall idea that is starting to look familiar--because so many designers and trendsetters are being influenced by Michelle Obama. Tracy Reese, who dressed the First Lady for her September speech to the Democratic National Convention, continues to be mesmerized by her muse. The Fall collection, Reese says, will embody rich textures, romantic prints, hourglass silhouettes and statement-making coats. The central item in this collection? The dress. Sound familiar?
We're betting that that many designers preparing for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week shows, which begin February 7, are influenced--consciously or not--by the fashionable First Lady.
