Daddy-to-Be Q&A With Adam Housley
In his first-ever StyleNetwork.com interview, Tamera Mowry-Housley's handsome hubby, Adam, dishes about the importance of family and how he's feeling this very moment with fatherhood just around the corner.
What was your first thought when you found out Tamera was expecting?
My heart hit the floor. It truly took my breath away. It's one of those moments in time that is truly life-changing. You always hear and think about it, but you just don't know the feeling until it happens to you. It's a mix of excitement, happiness, fear and about 50 other emotions that hit you all at once.
Have you always wanted to be a dad?
Absolutely! I have always wanted to be a father. I have always loved being with kids. From a very young age, my parents had my brother and I around other kids. I have held babies in my arms since I was little and watched many of these kids grow up through the years, so I feel comfortable around kids. Also, my parents and grandparents were such amazing examples of how much fun it is being a parent and also how it's the most important job you'll ever handle.
How many children do you eventually want to have?
Two of our own, if we are so blessed and maybe adopt an older child who doesn't have a home or family.
How's home life been since Tamera became pregnant?
Actually, it hasn't been that much different than before. Tamera has been a great mom already. We have always eaten healthy, been active and on-the-go, and that has continued. Obviously, we didn't travel much the last few months here in the end. Normally, we would try and visit our friends in London, and we haven't. We missed a few friends' weddings on the East Coast because Tamera can't fly and I won't go without her…we're a team. Tamera does miss having a glass or two of wine each week though.
What is your relationship like with your own father?
I am very close with both of my parents. Specifically, my father has been a fantastic example and is an amazing grandfather. He introduced my brother and I to the world. My mom was right there with him, of course, as they taught us to adapt to any situation, work hard, help anyone and respect all people. He and I still go on motorcycle rides together, ride horses and when I get some away time, I work with him at our family winery.
Tell us why family is important to you.
While I enjoy so much about life and this world, family is the most important to me. I love my friends and am so blessed to have many from all walks of life around the world, but to me it's all about family. There's that special bond and you go through so much together and teach each other so much. The triumphs, the heartache sand the celebrations—all of that is so much more special when you experience them with family. Tamera and I are so lucky to have such supportive families, and we make sure we spend as much time as possible with both and together.
How excited is your own family about your impending fatherhood?
They've waited a while, so needless to say they are ecstatic. My niece and nephew are at the ages where they'll now have a young one with whom they can play with and teach the ropes. My 12-year-old niece is taking a babysitting class and my 8-year-old nephew is ready to teach my son about Lego's and baseball. Cree will have a kid his same age now, too! My mom and dad and Tamera's parents can't wait.
Do you like that your son will be born so close to Halloween? Do you and Tamera love to dress up and celebrate the holiday?
Absolutely! I was born on Friday the 13th; my nephew was born on April Fools' Day. The holidays make birthdays fun. We also love to dress up for Halloween. I suspect parent/kid costume parties will be on the yearly schedule.
We know you have a name picked out already; did you and Tamera have a hard time coming to an agreement about the name?
Not at all. We right away wanted the initials to be A and T, and we pretty much agreed on the names early on. We are not into the crazy Hollywood name game, so you wont be shocked.
Does Baby Housley have any cousins waiting on your side of the family?
Yep, two. My niece, Alaina, who is 12, and my nephew, Alex, who is 8. I also have four godchildren in the same age ranges.
Will you encourage your son to play baseball, too? What about other athletic activities?
I love baseball and soccer, but I love sports in general. We will introduce him to everything we can and, while I hope he loves baseball like I do, we will support whatever he decides to persue. We also won't overwork him. He will get some kid time and we will introduce him to music and the arts like my parents did to my brother and I. Of course, we really do hope he likes baseball.
How much do you plan to participate in the birth?
However much Tamera wants. As all husbands know...that IS the right answer.
What important life lessons are you looking forward to teaching your son?
I can't wait to introduce him to the world. Show him the oceans, the mountains, the people and the animals. I want him to be able to assimilate and understand and, at the same time, not be afraid to take a stand and always do what's right…no matter what the consequences. We will also make sure he understands that he is blessed.
Will you be giving Tamera a "push present"?
Yes…did she tell you to ask this question?
You've traveled all around the world. What place are you most excited to travel to with your wife and son, and why?
There isn't just one. There is so much I have been lucky to see and so much more I can't wait to experience. I can't wait for our first baseball game. Our first trip to London to see friends and a soccer (football) match. Other parts of Europe, like Croatia, and back to Africa….it is all exciting to me and I hope it will be just as exciting to him. Tamera is always game...and willing to go with me anywhere…well, just about anywhere.
